Make It Happen Dream Big, Plan Ahead And Make It Happen

When Mel Myers’ exceptional abilities in mathematics and IT saw him join the first intake of students at the University of the Sunshine Coast, at the ripe old age of 14, it was pretty clear he was destined for great things.

That same determination and skill set now sees him running one of the most successful businesses in the region.

Starting out essentially by launching his own online shop selling mail order computer software, Mel went on to specialise in not only building comprehensive eCommerce solutions and online shops for others, but also beautiful, intelligent and responsive websites for a wide range of clients.

Today, Jetpack is a full service digital agency, delivering a range of innovative online strategies, including the strategic implementation of SEO, AdWords, Social Media and Electronic Direct Mail campaigns.

It was this process which also saw him become involved in BoxBrownie.com, an incredibly forward-thinking company that is revolutionising the photo editing industry with its digital photo editing services.

Mel began what was to become Jetpack in 2009, rebranding the company in its current form two years ago.

“When you start out in business, you tend to try a lot of different things and you find out what you’re good at, and what you’re not so good at, and that creates your focus,” Mel said.

“With Jetpack, I decided to focus on two specific things - custom and online shopping websites, and budget websites, the latter being a separate business. But just being able to offer those services, doesn’t mean customers will choose you. You have to have a point of difference.

“At Jetpack, whether it’s because we are good, or in the right place at the right time, or any number of things, we’ve been fortunate enough to do a lot of high profile online retailing sites, and very large official web stores, like the All Blacks Shop and ICC Cricket World Cup.

“We have had a lot of experience, ranging from very big brand names, to mum-and-dad online stores, and we apply the same level of skill and quality to them all.”

Mel believes that it’s not all about price these days, it’s about value.

“You have to have a point of difference in your business - and believe in the product or service you’re offering. If you’re not providing an advantage over others doing the same thing, why should customers choose you? Having that point of difference is one of my top three success strategies,” said Mel.

Jetpack are considered world leaders in web design, web development and digital application, with every website tailored to meet the customer’s every need. Shunning templates in favour of using the latest design techniques and cutting-edge digital technology, Jetpack is all about performance and exceptional results.

The hottest thing in that cutting-edge technology right now has to be BoxBrownie.com. It is suitable for everyone, from real estate agents to developers, professional photographers to amateurs, and online retailers who want to showcase their products with professional photos. It uses a cloud-based software system to make image editing fast, easy and affordable, and offers a wide range of services, including photography retouching, floor plans, and 3D rendering.

“It’s all about efficiency these days, so future business innovation will be about automation, cutting out the middle man and making it more affordable to do business here,” Mel said.

Mel and the Jetpack team have celebrated many wins, but he considers the most successful thing about his business is having been able to bring on those big brand names as clients, and build such a phenomenal portfolio.

“In just two years since rebranding Jetpack, it’s quite an achievement to build online stores for so many major brands all around the world; being able to get on board, deliver, and continue to deliver.”

Mel truly believes that if you have a good idea for a product or service, you should go and do it - or somebody else will. And he offers a couple more tips to help you.

“Everyone wants their business to keep growing but you have to consider scalability - if you grow, can your business handle it? The answer is to know where you’re heading, and plan to get there.

“You must also remember that your business is only as good as your team - if you want an A grade business, you need an A grade team!”
