Nimisha Raja’s contract to supply the NHS with healthy snacks arrived in the nick of time last month. The boss of Nim’s Fruit Crisps had been stockpiling fruit and vegetables since January, including all the apples she could buy and a 20-ton load of beetroot, in case of a no-deal Brexit at the end of March.

When the EU split was postponed, Nim’s faced the cost of storing the extra supplies for six months or more. Supplying NHS hospitals up and down the country should enable it to work through the massive hoard in less than half the time.

“We were lucky with the timing,” said Raja, who is based in Sittingbourne, Kent. She has no plans for further bulk-buying ahead of the new Brexit…
