Bargain hunters are licking their lips for the latest promotional campaign at Coles where customers will be given in store credit to go towards plastic containers each time they shop.
From Wednesday, shoppers will earn container credits when they spend $20 or more at Coles supermarkets and swipe their flybuys card.
They will then be redeemed for a range of five different reusable storage containers.
The two major supermarkets have had successful promotional campaigns with their own range of collectable miniature toys, which were criticised by many for plastic use wastage.
But this new offer, although being a plastic product, has a recyclable and convenient usage,
Coles chief operating officer Greg Davis said.
“We know our customers want to reduce food waste for environmental and family
budget reasons, and these reusable containers are a great way to keep food fresh in
the fridge or pantry without the need for more single-use plastic,” he said.
“Coles has removed 1.2 billion single-use plastic bags from circulation since we phased
them out of our stores last year, and since 2011 we have diverted more than 542 million
pieces of flexible plastic from landfill through our recycling partnership with Redcycle.”
One Facebook user reacted to a shopping dedicated account sharing a leaflet of the deal saying, “that’s a promo I can get around.”
Another said: “About time they offered something practical and for adults.”
And another: “Finally one for the mums!”
One user, however, questioned the “free” component of the deal, pointing out a shopper would need to spend $200 in store to receive 10 containers.
“That is a shocking price for one container,” Facebook user Rosie Lyons said in agreement with the comment.
“Considering some people do big weekly shops there so many people will be sucked in and not think about it, thanks for the heads up.”
The leaflet, shared on Markdown Addicts Australia Facebook page, says the containers are microwave, dishwasher and freezer safe as well as leak proof.
They come in five different sizes ranging from 600ml to 1.5-litres.
The promotion begins on Wednesday but shoppers need to have a flybuys card to participate.
